1926 Cotton–Blackburne 348cc
Model 29 TT
In 1926, Cotton achieved one of the most extraordinary moments in British motorcycle history. The Cotton–Blackburne 348cc Model 29 TT was the machine that helped secure 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in the Lightweight TT at the Isle of Man, a feat that firmly established Cotton as a racing marque of international significance.
As we mark the centenary in 2026, this machine stands not only as a motorcycle, but as a symbol of engineering conviction.
Powered by a 348cc Blackburne overhead-valve engine (350cc class), the Model 29 TT combined strong mid-range torque with exceptional mechanical reliability. What truly distinguished it, however, was the patented Cotton triangulated frame. At a time when most manufacturers relied on modified bicycle “diamond” frames,
Cotton’s rigid triangulated construction delivered:
- Superior torsional stiffness
- Precise steering control
- Reduced flex under racing stress
- Improved rider confidence at speed
This design philosophy gave Cotton an edge where it mattered most: cornering stability and road holding.
The 1926 Lightweight TT became historic:
1st Place
2nd Place
3rd Place
No other manufacturer achieved such dominance in that class that year.
It was proof that Cotton’s frame concept was not theory , it was competitive reality.
Engine: 348cc Blackburne OHV (350cc racing class)
Carburation: Period racing specification
Transmission: Hand-change gearbox
Frame: Fully triangulated Cotton patent design
Front Suspension: Girder forks
Rear: Rigid frame with sprung saddle
Lightweight, direct, mechanically honest the Model 29 TT was built for one purpose: to win.
In 2026, we celebrate 100 years since this defining victory.
What makes the Model 29 TT so important today?
Cotton focused on frame geometry when others focused only on engine power.
The 1926 victory positioned Cotton among Britain’s serious racing marques.
Performance through intelligent design, a philosophy that still resonates today.
The 1926 Cotton–Blackburne 348cc Model 29 TT represents more than a competition motorcycle. It represents a moment when innovation challenged convention and won.
As we commemorate its centenary in 2026, we honour not only a race victory, but the spirit of engineering independence that defined Cotton from the beginning.
